| Job Description | A process control engineer in a steel company develops, implements, and maintains control systems that automate and optimize the complex steelmaking process. The role focuses on improving efficiency, product quality, and safety while reducing waste and operational costs.
Key roles and responsibilities
· Design and implementation: Design, program, and install process control systems using Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Distributed Control Systems (DCS), and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. · System optimization: Use advanced control strategies like PID loops and model predictive control to ensure the manufacturing process operates consistently within desired parameters. This includes fine-tuning control loops to reduce variability and improve overall efficiency and yield. · Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve issues with control systems, instrumentation, and process deviations to minimize production downtime. · Monitoring and analysis: Continuously monitor and analyze process data, such as temperatures, pressures, and flow rates, to identify areas for improvement and ensure product quality. · Collaboration: Work with cross-functional teams, including operations, maintenance, and IT, to integrate control systems and implement plant-wide improvements. · Documentation: Create and maintain detailed documentation for control system logic, modifications, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the plant. · Safety and compliance: Ensure all process control systems adhere to strict safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
Essential skills
· Knowledge on control systems. · Technical expertise: Proven experience with industrial control hardware and software, including PLCs (e.g., Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, Siemens), DCS, SCADA, and Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs). · Analytical skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities for conducting root-cause analysis and identifying process inefficiencies. · Programming knowledge: Proficiency in programming languages used for control systems, such as ladder logic, function block diagrams, and potentially high-level languages like Python or C++ for advanced applications. · Process knowledge: A solid understanding of the steelmaking process, from raw material handling to finishing, is crucial for developing effective control strategies. · Soft skills: Strong communication and teamwork skills for collaborating effectively with diverse plant personnel. |
